Microsoft FrontPage
Note: You will need FrontPage extensions installed on your account, as covered in the Introduction
to FrontPage, before being able to perform anything outlined on this page.
Creating Subwebs
Subwebs allow you to get all the functionality of a Root Web (the main web site) but contained to
an individual directory on the site. (i.e., You can have a new theme applied to a subweb, but it
will appear in that entire subweb). Subwebs are for advanced users of FrontPage and are usually
for those that wish to section off their web site for multiple people to publish to it. You can
limit one's access to a particular subweb on your web site on a Unix hosting account.
- Open FrontPage (either on your PC or live to the site, instructions below)
- Go to New, Web
- On the window that appears, pick a web on the left (Empty Web is best)
- On the right, check the Add to Current Web box
- Then uncheck the box
- It just made your URL appear above
- On the end of the URL, add in /newwebname (with the appropriate new web name)
- Click Ok and you'll be automatically thrown into the new subweb
- The main web will still be open behind this new window
Connecting Live to Your Site
This is only for advanced users of MS FrontPage. (Remember, if you do make changes while connected
live, make sure to back them up to your PC as outlined below).
- If FrontPage is already open, close it down
- Connect to the Internet (do this before opening FrontPage)
- Open FrontPage
- On your toolbar in FrontPage you will see a little yellow file folder with an arrow
pointing down to its right
- Click on the arrow and choose Open Web...
- If you've published to your web before, you will see it in the window that pops
up, double-click it to enter
- If you have not published to the web before, then enter in the complete URL in the location
field (i.e., http://www.domain.com), click Open after doing so
- If you've published to your web before, your login information might already be saved
in the application, click okay to accept the information
- If you have not published to the web before, then enter in your account's username and password
- Once FrontPage is logged into the web, the web's directories and/or subwebs will appear, click on
the Open button to enter the main directory of the web
- Now you are viewing all the content in your web directly on the web server
- Any changes you make to files are immediate upon clicking Save
- When done, make sure to back up these changed files to your PC (instructions below)
Backing Up to Your Site
