Microsoft FrontPage

Note: You will need FrontPage extensions installed on your account, as covered in the Introduction to FrontPage, before being able to perform anything outlined on this page.

Creating Your Site
  1. After you have installed FrontPage to your PC, open the program from your Start, Programs menu in Windows
  2. After the application opens, you'll be presented with a blank page where you can start entering text, or go up to the toolbar to change the text colors, etc. just like in any other MS Office application
  3. Once you have tried a few different things out, right-click anywhere in the new page you've been working in, then choose Page Properties...
  4. Here you can change the page title, that appears on the web browser's toolbar when you view your web pages, the background color, link colors, etc.
  5. If you want to use a "theme" that was included with the application, close out of the Properties window and select "Theme..." from the Format drop down menu
  6. Select the theme you like best, or not one at all, and click Ok
  7. Go to the File drop down menu when done with the page, and choose Save As... Save your file according to the format discussed on our Web Site Info page, if you are not already sure how to name files for the Web
  8. You will want to save your files to the default directory that appears under Save As... unless you have used FrontPage before and understand how subwebs and webs work on your PC
  9. When ready to start a new page, go to the File drop down menu, and select New > Page
  10. If you implemented a theme in the earlier step, you'll notice the theme appears automatically in the new page (if you didn't, you will need to manually configure the way the page looks)
  11. You can link the pages together by going to the Navigation view (clickable on the left-hand side of the FrontPage window) and clicking on the files and dragging and dropping them together
  12. Once you've created several pages, and are ready to practice publishing, read the next section
  13. Remember: Practice makes perfect. Once you start to play around with the program a lot, you'll learn about the many new and cool things that you can add to your site, like message boards, forms, images, links, etc.
  14. You can always buy an additional book on getting started with FrontPage if the manual does not contain enough detail

Publishing Your Site

Once you are done building your pages or making changes to existing ones, you are ready to publish. The steps below are the same steps you will take every time you need to publish your web or make changes to it.
  1. If FrontPage is already open, close it down
  2. Connect to the Internet (do this before opening FrontPage)
  3. Open FrontPage, then go to File, Open, to open the web site that you would like to publish (you should have already created and saved the web site on your PC)
  4. Once the web site is open, go to File, Publish Web...
  5. Enter in your domain name
  6. Then click Publish
  7. As long as your FrontPage application locates your domain name and verifies that the FrontPage server extensions are installed, you will then be prompted for the username and password for your account
  8. Enter in the username and password
  9. After you have done this, you will see the pages start to publish to the site
  10. When the publishing is done, you will be presented with a link to view your web site
  11. Click on the link and it will take you to the site
  12. If you want to make any changes, just go back into FrontPage, make the changes and publish again as outlined above
