What is e-commerce?
E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services via the Internet.
What are the components to building an e-commerce web site?
The first component of e-commerce is establishing a presence on the Web with
a web site and web hosting. To sell goods online, you will need 1) shopping cart software,
and if you want to process credit card transactions online: 2) SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) enabled,
3) a payment gateway, and 4) a merchant account.
What is SSL or Secure Sockets Layer and how does it work?
SSL is a commonly used protocol for managing the security of a message transmission on the
Internet. To learn how it works, refer to our SSL getting started guide.
Does Tivilon have a secure commerce server?
Yes, Tivilon has a server with a SSL certificate installed.
Can I use Tivilon's secure certificate and SSL connection?
Yes, if you subscribe to one of Tivilon's shared e-commerce hosting plans, you
may use our secure certificate. Any directory, www page, or image can be served securely by
preceding the URL in the link with https:// and the proper server information (outlined in the next
FAQ). To keep warning messages from popping up in the user's browser, you'll need to make sure everything
on the secure pages is served through SSL (including the images).
Note that pages constructed in MS FrontPage cannot be made secure using the above manner. FrontPage
webbots do not work in SSL.
How can I use SSL for secure transmission?
If you are subscribing to an e-commerce hosting plan with Tivilon, you get SSL access
with your account. In order to use SSL on your account, change the URL of your web files to:
https://secure.tivilon.com/shared/[NT#####]/[File or Directory]
Replace the username and file location with your own.
Note that pages constructed in MS FrontPage cannot be made secure using the above manner. FrontPage
webbots do not work in SSL.
If I prefer not to use Tivilon's name and my username for the SSL certificate, what can I do?
You can purchase your own secure certificate from a certificate authority, such as
VeriSign or
Thawte. These
companies will review the background of your company, and charge you an annual fee for usage
of the secure certificate. By purchasing your own secure certificate, you can then use https://www.[Domain.com] for your
site's secure URLs.
Where can I find additional information about security on the Web?
Additional information about web security can be found on the following web sites:
What is shopping cart software?
Shopping cart software contains the catalog or other pages where a user reads
and makes selections of items to buy on a web site. The application places the items in the
user's "cart" and when the user is ready to "check-out" they can buy all the products they
have selected by making one transaction.
What is a payment gateway?
A payment gateway is software that is hosted on a server
that links an online store to a process that verifies that a customer, who is placing a credit
card order, has the credit available and that the order should be accepted or declined. Later, when
the merchant is ready to submit the charges for processing, the payment gateway accepts them and
submits the charges to a payment processor who facilitates the transfer of funds to the merchant.
What is a merchant account?
A merchant account allows a merchant to process credit cards online and have funds
electronically transferred into their bank account.
Do I need a payment gateway and merchant account to conduct e-commerce?
No, you can conduct e-commerce online and process the transactions manually offline if you
do not have a payment gateway and merchant account. If you want to conduct online credit card processing,
then you will need both.
